The EU Information and Cultural Centre (EUICC) marked the World Book Day in a unique and innovative way. To promote the culture of reading, writing and publishing of different literary genres, the EUICC organised several events over a week.
Literary activities were launched with a poetry exhibition of selected international and Kosovo poems handwritten in calligraphy by sculptor Besim Pllana. Actors Anisa Ismaili and Bislim Muçaj read some of the poems exhibited along with local poets who read their own poems.
To learn methods and techniques of writing, styles and structures of stories, both centres in Pristina and North Mitrovica organized a workshop with primary school students on writing short stories. Children were trained by Kosovo writers, and their stories will be published in a booklet which will be distributed to children for Europe Day.
A lively debate at the EU Information and Cultural Centre in Pristina on "Traditional book versus electronic book" elaborated the challenges faced by the traditional reader upon the rapid development of technology. The panel speakers represented the wide literary spectrum with public names in publishing market such as Nazmi Rrahmani, a writer and publisher of publishing house "Faik Konica", Avdullah Zeneli of "Buzuku", Shkelzen Gashi of "Rrokullia", Ballsor Hoxha writer and columnist, Ervina Halili a poet and literary researcher, Genc Salihu of bookshop "Dit' e Nat' and journalist and publicist Gjergj Filipaj.
There were diverse opinions by both the panelists and the audience on whether the electronic book is prevailing in rapport to the printed book. . In general, there was a consensus that the electronic edition has damaged the traditional book, especially the authors and publishers who mostly prefer to launch their literary works in the traditional medium.
The World Book Day events at EUICC were wrapped up with a panel discussion held on literary translation as cultural diplomacy. Panelists Elizabeth Gowing, writer and translator from the UK, and national writers and researchers such as Albatros Rexhaj, Ndue Ukaj and Ilire Zajmi discussed problems and challenges in the field of literary translations.
They said that literary translation not only promotes the writer, but also the country's culture. The panelists stated that literary translations should not be left solely to individual initiatives of writers, stressing out that Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Foreign Affairs must engage all literary agents and cultural attaches in order to promote the translated books of Kosovo writers abroad. Another conclusion that came out from this discussion was the necessity to establish an institute in Pristina which would engage professionals for literary translation, so there is an increase not only in the number of translated books but also when it comes to enhancing the quality of translations.
